Railway Civil Engineers' Association

The Railway Civil Engineers' Association exists to foster continuing professional development and the exchange of knowledge and experience between railway engineers by way of technical papers and discussions, site visits to engineering works and informal meetings and discussions about railway engineering.

Development of RCEA
The Association was founded in 1921 and has adapted over the years to keep pace with changes in the industry. In 1997 the Association reconstituted itself, broadened membership and became an Associated Society of the Institution of Civil Engineers, to enable it to serve the needs of engineers in the new railway industry which has emerged from the privatisation of British Rail.

Meetings
There is at least one meeting per month. Technical papers are given at the Institution of Civil Engineers in London and will be arranged increasingly in the regions. Site visits are made to railway works in progress. The subjects covered by papers and site visits include: Heathrow Express, Ashford International Station, the new subterranean Conway Park station at Birkenhead, Brunel's East London Line tunnel under the Thames, the Jubilee Line extension works at Stratford and London Bridge, metros at Sheffield and West Midlands.

Membership
Members are from the whole of the railway industry, both heavy and light rail from client organisations, consultants, contractors and suppliers.

Your Contribution
Your specific knowledge and experience will be valued and you will have the opportunity to share it with colleagues from elsewhere in the industry both at formal meetings and during informal discussions.

Benefits for You
A programme of papers and visits designed to meet the needs of railway engineers, continuing professional development, the chance to meet colleagues from a variety of backgrounds with potential innovative solutions for your problems, networking, the opportunity to be a privileged visitor to sites of work.

Joining the RCEA
Membership is open to professional engineers in Great Britain and Ireland who hold positions with significant responsibility for the development, design, construction, or maintenance of infrastructure for railway operations.
