David graduated from Imperial College in 1981 with an honours degree in Mechanical Engineering and was commissioned into the Royal Air Force (RAF) as an Engineer Officer. Following 15-months of aerosystems engineering training, he completed tours as the Junior Engineering Officer on the Buccaneer Operational Conversion Unit at RAF Honington, East Anglia, and as the armament engineering officer at RAF Kinloss, Scotland, responsible for the Nimrod aircraft´s emergency survival equipment, and weapons systems including torpedoes, sonabuoys, air-to-air missiles, anti-ship missiles, and depth charges.
From Kinloss, David moved in 1987 to Chattenden in Kent for a 2-year tour as the second in command of the tri-service Explosive Ordnance Disposal School. During his 3 years, he co-ordinated the safety assessment for the 5 different weapon systems for the Army´s new Attack Helicopter, and conducted the assessments for an advanced long-range stand-off missile, and anti-tank missile for the RAF.
David left the Ordnance Board to return to aircraft engineering in 1996 as the Senior Engineering Officer on the RAF´s VC10 Transport and Tanker Squadron at RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire where he was responsible for a team of 200 engineers and technicians.
