Graduate and Student Network: Supporting graduates and students

The key objective of ICE’s Graduate and Students Network (GSNet) is to promote the needs and interests of students, graduates and technicians working towards professional qualifications.

The GSNet supports regional committees across the world through the provision of best practice guides and running of national competitions, whilst using its voice to help influence Council and the wider role and work of ICE.

Council

GSNet is represented by two graduate members on Council. This ensures that Council is aware of issues affecting graduate and student members, and helps these members input their opinions. Council will often request feedback from GSNet on specific issues, such as where graduates see the profession of civil engineering is headed.

National competitions

GSNet’s premier competition is the annual Graduate and Student Papers Competition, which helps hone presentation skills and reward excellence in the communication of civil engineering ideas and research.

Regional committees

There are regional Graduate and Student committees across the UK, with further committees established in the Republic of Ireland, Hong Kong, Europe, Africa, The Americas and Asia Pacific. These committees help graduate civil engineers prepare for professional review by organising seminars and written assignment groups, whilst civil engineering in general is promoted through technical meetings and courses.

Social

Regional committees take a lead role in organising social and networking events such as the 5-a-side football competition which sees regional teams annually compete for the right to play for a national trophy every June. They also arrange careers events aimed at helping graduates and students connect with prospective employers.

Best Practice

The GSNet produces a detailed guide aimed at student, graduate and technician members of ICE interested in learning more about organising events, competitions or even establishing a G&S committee.

  • Meetings and competitions - find out more about the kind of activities carried out by regional G&S committees and the support provided by GSNet
  • Social events - Graduate and Student committees are very active in arranging and promoting social events for all members
  • Pre-19 events - learn about some of ICE's key initiatives in promoting the profession of civil engineering to younger learners
  • General best practice - access detailed assistance on writing articles for publications such as NCE, general advice on event arranging and the promotion of civil engineering

GSNet's best practice guide has been broken down into bite-sized chunks within these pages. You can also download the full document to find this information.
