ICE, through regional committees, and regional support staff does a huge amount to promote pre-19 learning and events.
Details of some of the key events aimed at under 19s can be found below, along with downloadable segments providing full details and information on organising these events.
Rapid Response Engineering Challenge
The Rapid Response Engineering Challenge (RREC) aims to communicate engineering principles to first year school children, based around the scenario of rebuilding a country devastated by a hurricane.
Following an initial presentation, pupils are informed that school has been ‘cancelled’ for the next two weeks, while they learn to become Rapid Response Engineers. At the end of this two week period, pupils work through a number of different bases as part of an Activity Day. These bases include:
- Making a shelter
- Transporting water
- Identifying key skills
Carrying out a successful RREC in schools cannot happen without the vital assistance of trained engineers. To find out more about the RREC, and how to get involved, download the GSNet guide.
West Point Bridge
The West Point Bridge Content allows students to become engineers, using a free software package to design and load-test a bridge. The software was originally designed by the West Point Military Academy.
ICE Regional Support Teams have access to a copy of the software, which is updated on annual basis. More information relating to:
- Setting up a content,
- Instructions for teachers,
- Instructions for engineers,
- And flyers
Can be obtained by downloading the GSNet document on West Point Bridge
Bridges to Schools
Bridges to Schools is an initiative that takes a 12m long model of a cable-stayed bridge into primary schools. For more information on accessing the model and arranging a school visit, please contact your Regional Support Team
