The Brownsea Shoreline Restoration project is a perfect example of proactive coastal management.
The National Trust had a series of old (1970s), failing defences on the south shore of Brownsea Island that were in a totally dilapidated condition. They were not preventing coastal erosion, were untidy and visually unattractive.
The National Trust applied for grants from Natural England to remove them all, restore the beach to its former glory and to NOT replace those defences. Many people thought this strange because the erosion will now accelerate, but The National Trust wants to work with natural process wherever practicable because that is the most sustainable approach for the long-term.
The Brownsea Shoreline Restoration project has now been successfully completed and came in under budget.
This presentation tells the story of how the project was planned, implemented and completed.
