The Wilts & Berks Canal connected the Kennet & Avon Canal near Melksham via Swindon to the River Thames at Abingdon. A further branch (North Wilts Canal) connected Swindon to the Thames & Severn Canal at Cricklade.
The waterway opened in 1810 and was officially abandoned in 1914. Over the past 30 years, plans have been developed to fully restore the canal. An ambitious delivery programme is now under way to complete the work in the next 10-15years.
