In June 2005, a 25m length of a cut and cover tunnel formed of segmental precast arches, on which a Tesco store was being built over the railway at Gerrards Cross, collapsed during construction. A robust reconstruction proposal, based on the re-use of as much as possible of the remaining structure, was developed and subjected for rigorous technical and commercial appraisal.

Scott Wilson’s proposed design used the original precast arch units, with new units of the original design to infill the collapsed section, as permanent shuttering for the construction of a new insitu reinforced arch supported both vertically and horizontally on the original piled foundations. This was a novel solution that presented complex design challenges.

This talk will explore the challenges of the reconstruction project.
