The construction of Gem Bridge is a major step forward for the 26km Drake's Trail cycling and walking route in West Devon.

The £2.1m bridge spans 200 metres (the longest in the National Cycle Network) to link Tavistock with Horrabridge, Yelverton and Plymouth. The innovative structure crosses the steep-sided Walkham Valley, in effect replacing the former Brunel viaduct which was demolished in the 1960s.

The new structure, 24 metres high, echoes the original Brunel design and includes graceful steel lattice arches supported on slender ‘wine glass’ shaped columns. The atmospheric and iconic structure has been carefully designed to respect the sensitivity of its surroundings, a local beauty spot.

Matthew McDonald, Site Agent for Dawnus Construction Ltd, the Design and Build Contractor for the scheme, will give an illustrated talk on the detailed design and construction of the bridge and will address the many challenges faced in carrying out the works in such a confined and sensitive environment.
