The revised Bathing Water Directive comes into effect in 2015 and its introduction will set tighter standards for bathing waters. Discharges from the sewage treatment works (STW) at Weston-super-Mare were understood to be having an adverse impact on bathing water quality, with a risk that they would fail to meet the new standard. An AMP5 project was established to improve the quality of effluent discharged from the STW, and reduce frequency and volume of storm overflow discharges.
Work, which includes a new activated sludge plant, final settlement tanks, storm settlement tanks, and new UV disinfection plant, will expand the existing STW with construction and commissioning due to be completed in January 2013.
Building in an area that attracts a wide variety of birds and wildfowl is one example of many technical and environmental challenges encountered during design and construction. The presentation will include an explanation of how this project has ensured that environmental issues have been addressed properly, and how birds as well as bathers are well looked after along the Severn Estuary.
