In 2003, Devon County Council’s Engineering Design Group was commissioned to carry out a feasibility study for a new footbridge to cross the Walkham Valley, Tavistock.
The study revealed that one of Brunel’s longest Viaducts in the South West, The Walkham Viaduct, once stood on the site. It also revealed the area was peppered with historic mine workings, posing a number of risks including sink holes and contamination. These findings would have a great impact on the design and construction of the new footbridge.
In this talk, Ben Naylor will explain how Gem Bridge evolved, and how the numerous hazards were considered during the feasibility design process and managed during the construction process.
