Speaker: Nina Tabink
Nina worked on-site at the Aquatics Centre for over a year. She was seconded to main contractor Balfour Beatty as package engineer for the installation of the roof and the construction of the pools. The roof construction was complex, which meant that close working was vital. “For me, the great joy was the intense collaboration,” says Nina. “As part of my work overseeing the design of the temporary works I met weekly with the Arup design teams, the steel fabricator, the client’s engineers, and an independent checker. And because another element of my role was quality control, I visited the steel fabricator’s works in Newport every week to check the fabrication of the complex heavy steel connections”. Nina also helped to ensure the monolithic concrete pool structure’s resistance to ingress from ground water and pool water “To build such a large pool with no construction joints means thinking carefully about pour sequence to control cracking,” she explains. “To keep the programme on schedule, we had to keep pouring concrete through winter and control the temperature using blankets and sensors to make sure it was curing in a controlled way”.
