The presentation will give an overview of canal history, the development of canals, initially following watercourses using rivers and streams for water supply, but later taking their own routes and needing storage reservoirs to provide water for lockage.
There will be mention of the hazards associated with reservoirs, failures and legislation; the need to intervene to bring reservoirs up to current standards of safety; reservoir management by the Canal & River Trust.
Case histories will include Rotton Park near Birmingham and discuss the works currently taking place at Pebley Reservoir, the Trust’s oldest dam.
