The important role of urban waterbodies in delivering essential ecosystem services, such as flood defense and recreational opportunities, is increasingly being recognised. In addition, urban aquatic ecosystems provide valuable aquatic and water dependent habitats that support high levels of biodiversity in fragmented landscapes.

This meeting aims to bring together scientists and practitioners working in this area to develop and share a wider understanding and recognition of the hydrological, ecological and societal value of urban aquatic ecosystems.

The meeting will consider urban aquatic ecosystems in their broadest sense (river, lakes, ponds, canal and wetlands) and include keynote talks from leading UK-based experts, including Dr Robert Francis (King’s College London) speaking on ‘Urban rivers as novel ecosystems’; Dr David Gledhill (University of Salford) ‘Thinking Outside the Pond: A wider urban landscape perspective’ & Dr Helen Proffitt (Canals and Rivers Trust) ‘Long-term ecological and water quality changes in canals of the Industrial Midlands’.

Who should attend?
The meeting will bring together scientists, engineers, water managers, regulators, consultants and policy-makers from universities, research institutes and agencies responsible for the management and conservation of urban aquatic ecosystems including the Environment Agency, Natural England, Countryside Council for Wales, DEFRA, Canal and River Trust and local Wildlife and River Trusts.

The meeting will also contribute towards Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements.

***Call for posters*** on the research topic of urban aquatic ecosystems are invited.

Those interested in contributing a poster should email:
Dr Paul Wood (p.j.wood@lboro.ac.uk) or Dr Helen Moggridge (h.l.moggridge@sheffield.ac.uk)
