Brian Robinson
Mines Rescue Officer

Date 16 FEBRUARY 2012
Time 18:00 - 20:00
Event Type Associated Society

The major mine collapse at the San Jose mine high in the Atacama region of Chile in late summer 2010, would not have even made the local news had there been a viable second means of egress.  The borehole techniques used in the rescue were not new, and have been used successfully several times since the 1950’s.

The presentation will look at the history of San Hose, the collapse itself, the rescue attempt and the aftermath.  It will discuss just how such an incident could be dealt with should a repeat occur.

All too often in recent years mining has had stories of tragedy.

The presentation will examine how the Chile mine rescue became the most followed story in many years, culminating in the very successful rescue of the 33 miners.
