A Northumbria branch talk delivered by Phil Stephenson and Gordon Mungall, Arup
The London Aquatics Centre will be one of the most eye catching venues of the London 2012 Olympics. The building is a Zaha Hadid Architects design, with an organic form and sweeping lines. This talk will describe the challenges that were faced by the structural engineers involved with the project, some of which included building above two major infrastructure tunnels, constructing a basement and pool tanks in an area of high groundwater, detailing a series of “sculptured” dive boards and designing a 140m clear span roof and temporary stand structures which are the same height as St James’ Park.
The talk will be given by Gordon Mungall and Phil Stephenson from Arup’s Newcastle office, two structural engineers who were part of the team responsible for the design of the concrete structure.
CPD: This event may be considered for contributing to a recognised Continuing Professional Development (CPD) scheme as part of personal development. Delegates should check their individual scheme requirements.
