Presentation by Richard Fowler & Beth McDowall of Magnox Limited
Bradwell Nuclear Power Station, located in the South East of England, on the coastline of the Blackwater Estuary, is a twin Magnox reactor, now undergoing decommissioning following shutdown in March 2002 after 40 years of operation. The station generated nearly 60 TWh of electricity during its operational life and on a typical day could supply enough electricity to meet the needs of three towns the size of Chelmsford, Colchester and Southend put together.
The site is now fully focused on completing decommissioning projects to achieve a ‘Care and Maintenance’ state to enable a period of passive storage lasting approximately 80 years. This will be followed by final site clearance.
In their talk, Richard and Beth will briefly outline the history of the site before describing the current phase of decommissioning works and some of the engineering challenges associated with working in and around a licenced nuclear site.
Richard Fowler is the System Engineer for civil structures and has been working at Bradwell for the last seven years during the decommissioning works. Beth McDowall is currently the Civil Project Engineer for the Reactor Safestore Cladding Project and associated works. This is the largest civil engineering project to be completed prior to the Bradwell site entering the Care & Maintenance Period and presents some important engineering challenges.
This meeting is open to ICE members and other interested parties. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early and take the opportunity to network with colleagues.
