Lecture 3 of 3
This year's Yorkshire and Humber Graduates' and Students' Committee Lecture series will explore the Bradford City Park project over three evening presentations from 5 to 19 February culminating in a site visit on 26 February.
Part of the regeneration master plan for Bradford City Centre, City Park is a high-quality, six-acre public space in the heart of Bradford containing the largest man-made water feature in any city across the UK. Seen as a critical component of Bradford’s regeneration, the Park was designed to bring jobs and prosperity to Bradford through attracting visitors and businesses into the district and helping to create a landscape for future investment.
The £24.5m scheme relied on collaboration between the client, designers, contractor and specialist supply chain to develop the design from the original concept, through to completion. The end result is a landmark public space comprising water features, trees and attractive green spaces, public conveniences and office/retail space.
This year’s G&S lecture series aims to provide an all-round view of the City Park scheme, with each lecture delivered by an expert involved in a particular aspect of the project. The lectures will run weekly over three weeks and will be based on the following:
- Lecture 1: City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council – The background to the Project, key aims and aspirations, project inception, assembling the funding package, key issues from the client side of the project
- Lecture 2: Arup – The design process, working with the client to develop a scheme to meet their budget and key engineering issues
- Lecture 3: Birse – Constructing the park, key construction issues
The series will be relevant to designers, contractors, consultants, local authorities and central government and is suitable for delegates who wish to attend any number of the lectures.
Places will be limited on the site visit due to H&S requirements. Full PPE (hard-hat, safety boots with steel toes and mid-sole, hi-viz, hard-hat, safety glasses and gloves) will need to be brought to the site visit. Priority will be given to ICE members who have attended all of the lectures.
