Approved Document A and the Eurocodes introduce the concept of formal ‘risk assessment’ into the structural assessment of Class 3 structures (although the principles apply to all structures).

Hitherto there has been a dearth of advice and guidance as to how this should be implemented in a consistent and value adding manner. This meeting will present three short project examples from Arup, WSP and Mott MacDonald of how this was achieved in practice and will then allow discussion and group debate on the key issues involved:

  • What is disproportionate?
  • What form should a ‘risk assessment’ take?
  • What issues should be covered?
  • Should methods distinguish between materials?
  • How should this be presented to Building Control?
  • Do quantitative methods have a role?

This subject will be of interest to all designers but specifically to those who design Class 3 structures. It will also be of value to the material sectors, Building Control and academics. The meeting will result in a briefing note and will also assist in the production of the guide on this subject currently being written by the Institution of Structural Engineers.

The three speakers will be:

James Middling Associate Director of Mott MacDonald<
Jeremy Wells  Structures Technical Coordinator at WSP
Steve McKechnie Associate Director at Arup

The meeting will be chaired by John Carpenter, co-author of ‘Disproportionate Collapse: the use of risk assessment’
