Designed by structural engineers WSP and architect Renzo Piano for Sellar Property, the Shard comprises 26 storeys of offices, 13 of apartments, 3 of restaurants and a 19 storey hotel. It is surmounted by a 65m tall spire, containing a public viewing gallery, bringing the height to 310m.
A hybrid form of structure is adopted, with composite steel construction at commercial levels and post-tensioned slab construction at hotel and residential levels.
The talk will concentrate on the structural aspects of the Shard: its design, construction and unusual features and should provide some examples for students and graduates to think about.
Speakers: Roma Agrawal, Associate, WSP
Refreshments from 5.45pm for a 6.15pm start
