There has been increasing demand for land in Hong Kong due to population growth, economic growth, public aspiration for better living quality and demand uncertainties. On the other hand, the supply of land from existing land supply options are facing more and more challenges and is becoming extremely difficult to ensure timely supply of land to meet the demand. Therefore, the government has decided to enhance the land supply strategy by reclamation outside Victoria Harbour and Rock Cavern Development (RCD) with an intention to develop a good mix of land supply options.
Reclamation has long been one of the most efficient ways to supply land for Hong Kong in the past. However, in recent years, the government is cautious in pursuing reclamation leading to significant reduction in land formation by reclamation. RCD has been widely used overseas for many land uses, but its potential application in Hong Kong is not yet maximized.
In this seminar, Mr. Kui-Biu LEE, Robin, Dep. Head of Civil Engineering Off ( Port & Land ), will give a brief account on the followings:
- Land shortage in Hong Kong
- Overview of existing land supply options and their challenges.
- Benefits of reclamation in solving the problem of land shortage and at the same time handling public fill / contaminated sediment.
- Benefits and application of rock cavern in Hong Kong
Speaker:
Mr Kui-Biu LEE, Robin - Deputy Head of Civil Engineering Office (Port & Land), Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD)
