Speaker: Ian Stanley IEng FICE, Tunnelling Director Terra Solutions Ltd

Ian will give an illustrated presentation provides an instant introduction to all major aspects of pipe jacking. Included is a description of the pipe jacking technique; applications and benefits of the system; site investigation requirements; design and construction methods; jacking pipes; and jacking lengths, loads and tolerances. Sustainability and environmental considerations will also be covered as trenchless techniques while being viewed as being expensive create less disruption of the workplace with reduced traffic congestion in the surrounding area due to reduced lorry journeys; no reduction in road life; reduced air pollution; reduced need for landfill sites; reduced need for quarries; reduced tax because of landfill and quarrying; reduced noise, smells, dust and CO2 emissions. Open cut excavations disrupt the Country as a whole causing widespread traffic chaos, underground service damage, damage to the fabric of our roads and give rise to an “unseen” cost of £2billion per year (TRL research) which has to be paid for by the community.
