Time 11:00 - 14:00
Event Type AGM

Bridge No.30, between Goathland and Grosmont, was an unusual design of bridge built in 1866 and carrying the railway over a river in a remote part of the North York Moors National Park.  The talk will briefly explain the various structural problems with the old bridge.  Strengthening works were carried out in 1906 and 1908 and today’s problems were identified in 2009.  Its removal and replacement with a new bridge will be illustrated with the reasons for the particular design adopted.  Due to the inaccessibility of the site, the use of a rail crane will be described with the larger items being delivered by rail.  The talk will be presented in a light hearted manner to entertain rather than provide detailed engineering information!

Our Speaker

Nigel Trotter is a Chartered Civil Engineer who worked for British Rail for over 30 years.  The BR Graduate training scheme provided a varied range of experiences from shovelling track ballast to designing bridges.  Nigel then worked his way up the ladder to become Area Works Engineer at Leeds where he was responsible for the maintenance and renewal of structures including nearly 70 miles of tunnels.  He later become Area Permanent Way Engineer before leaving to become a consultant working on many diverse projects including tilt trains on the West Coast Route, Channel Tunnel and other works activities.

Nigel has been Honorary Civil Engineer on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway from the start, being responsible for inspecting, maintaining and renewing the often old and worn out infrastructure.
