ICE Teesside Branch & Northern Geotechnical Group
Tuesday 19 March, 5.45pm for 6.15pm lecture.
AGM 6.00pm
Presented by: Professor David Toll, Durham University
Climate change has the potential to have significant effects on the stability and serviceability of earthworks slopes, impacting on the performance of our transport infrastructure. The television programme makers have had a marvellous time looking at 2012 disasters in the North East. One local authority had 8 landslides last year, and it has become the major issue for railways.
With climate change set to create more extreme weather what should civil engineers do?
ICE North East Chairman, Professor David Toll will describe a unique facility for research into climate change impacts that has been established in the North East through the BIONICS Project (Biological and Engineering Impacts of Climate Change on Slopes). He will describe the building and monitoring of a full-scale embankment representative of rail/road embankments in the UK. He will report on the pore water pressure responses to weather events.
This lecture will be aimed at both students and engineers with interest in highways or railways, geotechnical engineering and disaster management, along with anyone interested in climate change.
