ICE Northumbria Branch & IStructE Northern Counties joint talk
Presented by: Sean Wilkinson, Newcastle University and Katsu Goda, Bristol University
Of the many earthquakes that occur each year, last year two major stand out as being particularly important. These were the 22nd February 2011, Mw 6.3, Christchurch, New Zealand earthquake and the 11th March 2011 Mw9.0 Tohoku, Japan earthquake.
The Earthquake Engineering Field Investigation Team sent reconnaissance teams to both earthquakes and the observations and lessons to be learnt from these earthquakes will be presented at this meeting. The two earthquakes are particularly noteworthy as they occurred in regions that can be considered to have good construction industries and very good seismic codes and therefore are particularly relevant to countries with modern construction industries such as Europe.
This talk will not only appeal to structural and civil engineers, but also to anyone that has an interest in planning and responding to disasters as well as to general members of the public.
Sean Wilkinson is a senior lecturer in the School of Civil Engineering and Geosciences at Newcastle University who was a member of the reconnaissance team sent to Christchurch. Katsu Goda is a lecturer in the Department of Civil engineering at Bristol University and a member of the reconnaissance team sent to Japan.
