As part of its commitment to improving environmental standards, United Utilities is building a new process treatment works extension to Liverpool WwTW within the adjacent Wellington Dock. The Sequence Batch Reactor (SBR) will enhance standards and have sufficient capacity to serve a growing population; it will be able to handle 11,000litres of waste per second.
This presentation looks at the ground engineering challenges faced when dealing with construction in a 19th century historical dock. Topics to be discussed include WWII bombs, ground investigation, soft dock silts, foundation selection for settlement sensitive structures, dredging and infilling work and finally installation of rock socket piles.
