Date 21 FEBRUARY 2012
Time 17:30 - 19:30
Event Type Meeting

The presentation will include the key practical and technical challenges encountered and overcome during the construction of 1.25km of quay wall forming part of a new deep water container port at Shellhaven in the Thames Estuary.

The Port, which will receive the largest container vessels in the world and comprises six berths, is formed by deep diaphragm walls which are constructed through new land which has been formed by dredged fill. The specialist geotechnical works undertaken by Bachy Soletanche Limited include circa 1.4 m3 vibrocompaction to 24m depth and circa 95,000 m2 diaphragm walls to a maximum depth of 48m. Design challenges posed by the 27m retained height combined with changing ground conditions, tight wall deflection requirements and complex loading conditions will be explained together with the logistical pressures posed by the need to construct in excess of 2,000 m2 of wall per week.

David Puller has had the role of Chief Engineer for Bachy Soletanche based in the South of England for several years. He has been involved with the technical and commercial aspects of many of the company’s ground engineering projects during this time and he is currently acting as Project Manager for the company’s contract at London Gateway.
