London’s Paddington Station, the terminus of The Great Western Railway, was the masterpiece of the Company’s first Chief Engineer, I K Brunel. The core of the station is a magnificent three span arch roof on slender iron columns. However, in the early part of the 20th century, the station was much extended, most notably by the addition of a grand fourth span to the roof structure. The structure is Grade I listed.
Network Rail, the asset steward, has just completed the first major refurbishment of span 4 for over half a century, undertaken by Morgan Sindall with WSP as designer. The talk will look at details of the original construction and subsequent modifications, the assessment to current loading standards and the deficiencies found, site investigations to inform the design, design of strengthening of metalwork and re-cladding and finally the construction phase. The project has recently won an ICE Historic Bridges and Infrastructure Refurbishment Award.
Our speakers at this meeting are Graham Slade, CEng MICE MIStructE and Quan Jin, MSc, both of WSP.
