Event Type Meeting

Prince William's Bridge is a new pedestrian bridge within the historic Fort Amherst, Chatham, designed by Mott MacDonald and built by Birse Civil Engineering. It won the Kent & East Sussex Branch’s Structures Award for 2011 and required the spanning of a defensive ditch which had successfully prevented access to the Fort for two centuries. The presentation will show how a number of key challenges in design and construction were identified and overcome.

The new bridge is consciously modest in its appearance, so as not to detract from the Fort itself. It has been detailed to be robust and durable and includes lightweight modern elements such as fibreglass flooring and a stainless steel mesh balustrade. Its location across a defensive ditch meant that access for construction was particularly difficult but the physical impact on the Fort, which is a Scheduled Monument, has been carefully limited.

Our speaker is Brian Duguid, Project Manager, Mott MacDonald.
