This year our speaker is Professor Garry Pender, Head of the School of the Built Environment and Professor of Environmental Engineering at Heriot-Watt University. Garry's research interests are focussed on fluvial flooding and sediment transport and, along with many other high profile research programmes, Garry was Principal Investigator on the £12.9m Flood Risk Management Consortium (stages 1 and 2). He is a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) and the Royal Society of Edinburgh.
Garry's lecture will cover developments in the computer simulation of flood and sediment transport from the 1980s to the present day. This period has seen significant developments in computer technology, user interfaces and numerical methods that have transformed the availability of computer models from the exclusive reserve of research specialists to veryday use in design offices.
