Speaker: Julian Lovell, Managing Director, Equipe Group
The First Edition of the Specification for Ground Investigation, which replaced an earlier ICE publication of the same name, was published in 1993 by Thomas Telford as Part 3 of the Site Investigation Steering Group (SISG) suite. In 2012, this document was revised to become The UK’s Specification for Ground Investigation under a new suite of SISG documents with the hope that it would become the ‘specification of choice’.
The majority of ground investigations carried out in the UK use a standard specification format and wording based on the First Edition or a variation derived from this document. The Second Edition revision was required to recognise changes in technical standards (mainly Eurocode 7), legislation and guidance and new innovations and technology. It was also developed to be more flexible and therefore reduce the requirement for bespoke variations of the standard document.
The presentation provides an overview of the structure put in place to carry out the revision and the process involved. The new format and layout will be explained together with an explanation of the most significant changes made. The document will be discussed in relation to the other documents in the SISG suite and how these were aimed at bringing the whole site investigation industry together.
Julian Lovell is Managing Director of the Equipe Group and member of the AGS Executive Committee. From 2007 to 2012, he was responsible for the project management of the revision process and an active AGS Steering Group member assisting the author to deliver the final document.
*At 6.00pm there will be a short presentation by David Hinxman of Royal Haskoning DHV, winner of the Northern Geotechnical Group Young Engineers’ Prize.
