Date 14 MARCH 2013
Time 11:00 - 13:00
Event Type Meeting

The presentation will show how the Nuclear Power Station was built from a civil engineering point of view and the techniques used to get round some of the many problems faced by engineers during its construction in the period May 1964 to July 1966.  During large projects of this nature there are always some incidents that require further examination and Bill will also be looking at a few of these.  Please bear in mind that it is now 50 years since this project was started and so do not expect anything other than a general illustrated talk with a time for your questions at the end, which Bill may or may not be able to answer!

Our Speaker
Bill Ixer, Ing C.Eng, MICE, is a retired Civil Engineer and a member of RICE.  He started out working with Contractors in the 1960’s and following a period of site work at Oldbury and Wylfa Nuclear Power Stations went into the design office of Taylor Woodrow Construction.  He became a Chartered Engineer in 1968 and then moved into Local Government as a Civil Engineer – working for Cornwall and then South Yorkshire County Councils on highway and industrial infrastructure projects and finally for Sheffield City Council, where he was responsible for the training of engineering graduates and technicians and advising professional engineers on their individual Continuing Professional Development programmes until he retired in 1992.  Following ‘retirement’ he worked overseas as project manager in Azerbaijan on a UNCHR Refugee Residence Rehabilitation project for a brief period and now shares his experiences and expertise to train engineers and humanitarian people for work in refugee and other disaster situations.
