Refreshments will be available from 17.30 and the talk will begin at 18.00.
There have been significant changes in the way that deep excavations and basements can be analysed. This talk will discuss four cases extending from 1982 to 2012.
The early basement was designed and constructed before widespread use of computer analyses. The analysis of earth pressures and bending moments was based on relatively simple active and passive earth pressure calculations and checked with a prototype piece of software.
Current practice makes extensive use of software. Full FE analysis is common for large or complex projects. However, the basis of the analysis has limitation in terms of fundamental soil mechanics and is based on drainage conditions that are not realistic. Eurocode now requires SLS and ULS analyses and there are questions about the validity of ULS analyses in soil-structure interaction analyses. 3 more recent designs are used to look at the power of the analyses and their limitations and how geotechnical and structural analysis and design can merge into a single process.
Our speaker, Dr Deneys Schreiner, is a Geotechnical Engineer with 35 years’ experience since graduating as a Civil Engineer. He has worked in a wide range of the Civil Engineering industry and in a wide range of countries and ground conditions. He is currently a Technical Director at WorleyParsons. Prior to moving there he was lead geotechnical engineer for Crossrail Paddington Station for URS whilst also leading the geotechnical engineering and engineering geology teams in the UK South. Deneys has a PhD from Imperial and has published over 20 conference and journal papers.
