London Underground’s Tottenham Court Road station is currently being upgraded to accommodate projected increases in the passenger numbers. The works include the construction of additional passenger tunnels to improve passenger circulation.
Moving away from the traditional 3 stage hand mined cast iron solution and achieving a first on the London Underground network, the project has designed and constructed two spray concrete lined passenger overbridges passing directly over the operational Central Line platform tunnels. The contractor, a joint venture of Taylor Woodrow and BAM Nuttall, have constructed two SCL caverns above the existing platform tunnels in which the overbridge permanent works were constructed.
The talk will consider the need for the overbridges within the context of the station upgrade, the feasibility studies leading to the identification of the SCL solution, the analysis and design of the SCL works and the assessment of the effect of the works on the adjacent 3rd party assets. The talk will also look at construction methodology, impact on programme and the implementation of a strategy to manage risks associated with this novel use of SCL.
Tea and biscuits will be available at 5:30pm
