Afghanistan is one of the few large countries in the world which until very recently had no significant rail network. Richard Brown will describe how the Afghan Government would like to see rail develop, the strategic planning that has so far been undertaken and the quite extraordinary challenges that are being faced as the first rail services get underway.
The speaker has 40 years of experience as a railway engineer, and has been in the Territorial Army - in the Royal Engineers - for some 35 years. In Afghanistan, he was ‘Strategic Infrastructure Adviser' at HQ ISAF in Kabul for ten months in 2011 and he had a key influencing role in rail development.
