The Environment Agency, is the “Competent Harbour Authority” responsible for structures at Rye Harbour, East Sussex. The 1.4km long steel sheet pile Western Training Wall had fallen into a condition of deterioration. Fears of structural failure leading to potential closure of the harbour were expressed. As a matter of urgency the £9.7m reconstruction project was fast tracked to commence in January 2012. Despite a challenging intertidal environment and many operational, environmental and ecological constraints, the project was successfully completed in December 2012. The scheme is being held as an example of a “can-do” attitude team effort.
Howard Davidson, (Environment Agency South East Regional Director) said: “If there had been a medal in 2012 for ‘mobilising on site and driving sheet piles’ Rye Harbour Western Training Wall would have won it . Olympian effort. Well done.” The works also generated acclaim from the local public and neighbouring nature reserve.
The presentation, given by Peter Richardson, Project Manager at the EA, will cover the design approach, contractual arrangements, environmental constraints and mitigations, and construction issues.
