This is a meeting organised by the Southern Branch of CIHT which ICE members and guests are most welcome to attend.
Refreshments will be served from 17.30 and the presentations will commence at 18.00.
In 2007 a successful Sustrans Connect2 Lottery bid to the Big Lottery Fund secured a contribution to a project to improve cycle and walking routes in the area and that focussed on a project to replace the life expired 1919 concrete footbridge. In 2010 WSCC completed the procurement process for a design and build project to remove the old bridge and to construct a replacement that would cater for both walkers and cyclists and to provide the missing link between the rail station, town centre, beach and existing South Coast Cycle Routes to Brighton and Worthing.
The new bridge will be over 200m long, with an opening span for river traffic and provides a 4m wide combined foot and cycleway for the 800,000 pa users. It is probably the largest project of its type currently under construction in the UK.
Osborne commenced the design phase in 2010 and the construction phase in August 2012. Bridge completion is programmed for August 2013.
The presentation will give an insight into the journey so far and will highlight some of the technical and political challenges along the way. Our speaker is Peter Bradley of West Sussex County Council. Peter has been employed by WSCC for 26 years, initially on the graduate training scheme, gaining chartered status as a senior engineering the Structures team, then moved into Traffic Management and Road Safety Engineering. In recent years, Peter has worked with specialists in delivering many different aspects of highway services such as street lighting, traffic signals and highway structures. He now leads on delivery on most of the highways capital programme.
