The London Underground system carries 1,107 million passengers each year along its 402 kilometres of track which link 270 stations with 426 escalators between them. Known as the tube since 1890 when the first deep underground electric railway opened, 45 per cent of the network is in tunnels.

Since 1945 there has been significant developments on the network including:
•    Completion of the Central Line
•    The Piccadilly Line extension to Heathrow Airport
•    The creation of the Fleet Line
•    The Jubilee Line extension
•    The creation of Transport for London
•    The building of the Victoria Line
•    The links to Crossrail and the Docklands Light Railway
•    Work at Stratford International Station for the London 2012 Games

This event will explore the integrated architecture and engineering which has taken place between 1945 and 2012 to bring you up to date on the current network.

A special website has been set up to celebrate the 150th anniversary of London Underground which can be accessed at www.ice.org.uk/LU150

Each month throughout 2013 new sections are being added to this website to provide information on each of the 11 London Underground lines.

Please note this event may be filmed and live streamed on the internet as part of ICE London’s Knowledge Sharing Programme.
