The London Underground system carries 1,107 million passengers each year along its 402 kilometres of track which link 270 stations with 426 escalators between them. Known as the tube since 1890 when the first deep underground electric railway opened, 45 per cent of the network is in tunnels.
This event looks at the geotechnical challenges of building that tube network and how those challenges were successfully overcome using civil engineering techniques which were innovative and effective in their time.
A special website has been set up to celebrate the 150th anniversary of London Underground which can be accessed at
www.ice.org.uk/Tube150
Each month throughout 2013 new sections are being added to this website to provide information on each of the 11 London Underground lines.
Please note this event may be filmed and live streamed on the internet as part of ICE London’s Knowledge Sharing Programme.
