Civil engineers design for the long term.
The operating life of much new infrastructure will extend beyond 2050, into a period when the climate is projected to change substantially from current conditions.
However, there is uncertainty over the nature and scale of the changes. How can today’s civil engineering designs respond to uncertain impacts several decades away? This seminar will address the challenge.
Expert speakers will examine:
- The achievements and limitations of current climate science
- How we can assess the range of climate change outcomes probabistically Indicative upper and lower bounds of climate change impacts
- How risk based design can cater for a range of outcomes in 50 years time
- Design philosophies & options for further development (such as “least regrets”, reducing infrastructure design life, designing to accommodate additional works/changes before end of life)
This will be followed by a chaired discussion with the audience.

The lecture is also available to watch online, either live or at a later time of your convenience.
