Event Type Meeting

Refresments will be avaialble from 18.00 and the presentation will commence at 18.30.
In past decades highway engineers would reach for their toolbox of standard solutions to resolve accident hotspots on the road network. However, budget cuts and calls for greater efficiency mean nowadays highway engineers need to come up with more innovative solutions, including considering WHY motorists and other road users behave the way they do.

Our speaker is Giles Darling, a highways engineer with an interest in psychology and he will look at what goes on in the head of the typical road user, and why some road improvement measures have more impact on driver behaviour than others.
This presentation proposes that using psychology enables highway engineers to create more effective road designs by considering a human-centred perspective alongside the typical engineering-centred solutions relied on in the past.
