The Ghazi-Barotha Hydropower Project is the first of the mega projects constructed in Pakistan where the design and construction has been led by Pakistani Consulting Engineers. The scheme comprises a 3km long barrage across the River Indus, a 52km long by 100m wide and 9m deep power canal and a 1,450MW power house from which power is fed into the Pakistan Grid at 500kV.
Construction was started in 1995, the Inauguration was in 2003 and the out-turn cost was about USD 2,070 million.
The talk will firstly introduce the Indus Basin Irrigation Scheme. This will be followed by a description of some of the characteristics of the River Indus that significantly affect the design, the main features of the barrage, the river diversion sequences required for its construction and the construction of all the remaining elements of the Ghazi-Barotha Scheme.
Our speaker, Graham Tombs was educated at Exeter School, The Royal College of Advanced Technology Salford and Imperial College. For his PhD, Graham worked under Professor Bishop on research for Binnie and Partners for the design of Lyn Brianne Dam. At Imperial College he was recruited by Tippetts Abbett McCarthy and Stratton of New York to go and work for them on the supervision of construction of Tarbela Dam in North West Pakistan. After this he joined Binnie and Partners and worked on investigations, design and construction supervision for dams, tunnels, water supplies, sea defences, civil and mechanical works for barrages, irrigation schemes, hydro schemes, desalination plants, solid waste management and alternative energy schemes in a number of countries.  These included the UK, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Iran, Pakistan, Malaya, Hong Kong, Australia, South Africa, Botswana, UAS and the Philippines.
