Over the last 10 years the expansion in gas recovery from unconventional gas reserves, such as those from shale formations, has reshaped the energy landscape in the USA as well as having a major impact on global energy markets. Within the UK, the potential use of ‘fracking’ to recover natural gas from shale formations has generated huge media interest over the last few years, primarily as a result of the perceived environmental risks that such activities may pose.
In this talk Dr Jeffrey Priest will explore the development of this technique, the impact that it has had both economically and enviromentally within the USA (where fracking has been extensively employed), and highlight some of the potential issues that have been raised with this technique in the USA. Jeffrey will then consider fracking from the UK perspective, exploring the potential benefits of developing and using this technique and the potential envionmental risks associated with fracking.
Dr Jeffrey Priest, is a lecturer in Geotechnical Engineering at the Univeristy of Southampton. As well as teaching, he is actively involved in research, with his interets broadly associated with understanding the geomechanical performance of soil, through both laboratory and field measurements. He has extensively researched the behaviour of gas hydrates soils, which is another form of unconventional natural gas reserve and published over 15 journal and conferences papers on the subject. Jeffrey is also the current Chairman of ICE’s South Branch Geotechnical Group.
