The resilience of the North East’s infrastructure is being threatened by climate change, bringing ever increasing extremes of weather. The region was almost cut off from the rest of the UK during last year’s floods that severed road and rail links.  How are civil engineers improving the resilience of our energy supplies from the threat of terrorism and vandalism which could impact on our infrastructure networks, industry and homes?

Smeaton Lecture 2013: A Design for Life: James Newlands and the origins of the Borough Engineer

When James Newlands (1813-1871) arrived in Liverpool in January 1847 to take up the newly created position of Borough Engineer, he formed, along with Dr William Henry Duncan (Medical Officer of Health) and Thomas Fresh (Inspector of Nuisances), Britain’s first public health team.
