The resilience of the North East’s infrastructure is being threatened by climate change, bringing ever increasing extremes of weather. The region was almost cut off from the rest of the UK during last year’s floods that severed road and rail links. How are civil engineers improving the resilience of our energy supplies from the threat of terrorism and vandalism which could impact on our infrastructure networks, industry and homes?

Presentation by Tom Hunter & William Coulet – Broads Authority. Managing dredged sediment in an area with the equivalent status of a National Park, numerous nature reserves, SSSIs and Ramsar sites is a challenge. This presentation looks at how these challenges are overcome and some recent innovative projects involving the construction of retaining structures in very soft ground on a limited budget.

An increasing number of smallholder farmers engage in irrigation using their own resources. They buy or rent irrigation equipment and draw water from nearby sources, such as rivers, canals, reservoirs and groundwater, without depending on or interference from public agencies and Water Users’ Associations

Increasing urbanisation has caused problems with increased flash flooding after sudden rain. As areas of vegetation are replaced by impermeable concrete, tarmac or roofed areas the area loses its ability to absorb rainwater. This rain is instead directed into surface water drainage systems, often overloading them and causing floods.
