RedR: Reconstruction in Haiti - Rescheduled from 22 January

Tom Newby is a structural engineer who has had two postings to Haiti, first with Tearfund soon after the earthquake in 2010 and then with Habitat for Humanity in early 2012. During these postings his work involved setting up a transitional shelter programme and permanent housing reconstruction. He will talk about his experiences and the engineering aspects of the work.

Developing High Speed Rail for Britain

Dredging in The Broads - Engineered Sediment Management in a Sensitive Environment

Managing dredged sediment in an area with the equivalent status of a National Park, numerous nature reserves, SSSIs and Ramsar sites is a challenge. This presentation looks at how these challenges are overcome and some recent innovative projects involving the construction of retaining structures in very soft ground on a limited budget.

Over the last five years Aggregate Industries has implemented a range of initiatives designed to make our activities safer. Since May 2012 the contracting division has worked over 3,000,000 hours without incurring a single RIDDOR incident. In his talk Ian will expand on this remarkable statistic, outline some of the difficulties in achieving this and the strategies employed by the company to not only reduce accidents to zero but to maintain the standard once it has been achieved.

Heathrow began life as a small preWW2 airfield for Fairey’s, an aircraft manufacturer.  After WW2 it was decided to rebuild Heathrow as the prime London Airport.  It has grown to be the busiest UK airport with 70 million passengers and 1.5 million tonnes of freight passing through per annum.  It has seen many innovative buildings built, including terminals, aircraft hangars, tunnels & the control tower.

Hong Kong Mass Transit Railway - A Success Story

The Hong Kong Mass Transit Railway is one of the few profitable railways in the world. Its success led to its listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in October 2000. This presentation traces the birth and growth of the Hong Kong Mass Transit Railway through the economic and political turbulence during the negotiation of the future of Hong Kong in the 1980’s and 90’s to become an international corporation today.  It details the management decisions taken to deliver each line On Time and Within Budget. It also outlines the factors and the leading role played by engineers that underpin its success.
