In this seminar, speaker Dr Raiss will introduce the rationale of the route, history and funding mechanism of Crossrail. He will then focus on the Central Section which runs under London city centre and compare two of its underground stations which were designed by URS, Paddington and Farringdon. Dr Raiss will also describe some of the innovation and cost-savings incorporated in the design, and give an update on the current status of this project.
The Graduates and Students Division of the Institution of Civil Engineers (Hong Kong Association) strives to facilitate effective knowledge exchange for the benefit of Hong Kong’s youngest and brightest engineers. This year’s ICE HKA G&S One-day Seminar, ‘Advances and Innovations in Civil Engineering’ aims to take stock of innovative design & construction method and discuss the ever important role engineers have in facing modern day challenges across the globe.

Aker Solutions conceptually designed the accelerator-driven thorium reactor 600 MWe power station, an accelerator-driven, thorium-fuelled, lead-cooled fast reactor. Project objectives were to demonstrate the technical feasibility of the design to ensure a viable product.
