A presentation by Prof. Paul Lambert of Mott MacDonald and Sheffield Hallam University.
Following the Second Word War there was need to rapidly reconstruct and reinforced concrete offered much of the solution. In the 1960s the huge expansion in the roads network resulted in thousands of structures being designed and built in a relatively short time period. By the 1970s, many of the shortfalls in material, design and construction practices were becoming apparent and numerous studies were carried out to understand the problems and develop solutions for existing structures. This presentation will look at the development of durable reinforced concrete technology, its mechanisms of degradation and the many techniques now available to enhance and extend the life of our infrastructure.
