ATLANTIS Initiative

Atlantis is a public-sector initiative to understand the underlying issues and agree the best practice standards to collectively provide interoperable base geographic and environmental datasets to better support water management in flooding and water quality for the 21st century.

By improving flood modelling and predominantly the accuracy of event forecasting and predictions, Atlantis will enable a consistent approach to information underpinning all aspects of the flooding life cycle (planning, monitoring, response in and event, restitution, lessons learnt and so on). The initiative also covers identifying all features of critical infrastructure that could be considered at risk from flooding on a national scale, and implementing protective measures.

The core data (terrain model and river network) will be supported by several 'complementary datasets' such as geology, coastal data and properties. This will ensure the data are much better placed to help the user solve problems. The Digital National Framework (DNF) model is well aligned with the emerging INSPIRE technical framework.
