Climate Change is now widely accepted by the scientific community. We recognise that positive steps have already been taken by the Mayor’s Office and the LDA, but tackling Climate Change – both its perceived cause and its effects - is our generation’s responsibility to London’s future. It cannot wait. Forecasting indicates that the existing policies fall well short. Power shortages will exist by 20151. Failure to deal with the problems lies at the door of the current generation of politicians and business leaders. Lead times are already too short, and work against us. We conclude that we must all act now to ensure London remains a
world-leading trade centre, an international hub, and the centre of the nation’s governance. We want London to continue to be recognised as a pinnacle of modern societal aspiration and innovation both at home and abroad.
London’s Civil and Mechanical Engineers have again united in this report to present a set of key recommendations to our politicians. We review the current issues relating to: Energy, Water and Flooding, Transport, Waste, Sustainable Communities and Skills in the capital. The need for some of the solutions is
widely accepted, but many of the issues need changes in approach by society to enable the implementation of current solutions, and such changes can only be driven by political decisions that take a holistic view of the problems facing London.
Members of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) will help to define and deliver solutions to deal with the causes and effects of climate change and its impact in London. We speak with one voice giving you access to impartial advice and informed opinions. Working
together we can offer you a range of potential solutions based on current technology. We hope to work with you to achieve a better future.
