ICE Vernon Harcourt Lecture 2008

Estuarine barriers and barrages are among the biggest civil engineering projects and are frequently constructed in challenging and environmentally sensitive environments.  Rising sea levels will require new barriers for flood protection, and the search for sustainable sources of energy could lead to new barrages for generation of power from the tides.

Peter Hunter draws on his experience to review some major European projects, particularly the 25km St Petersburg Flood Protection Barrier and the Cardiff Bay Barrage.
